Confused House, Confused Housewife!

The Garage Sale was called off this weekend. The weather this summer has been fabulous, not much rain and bright sunny skies but of course I wanted to have my sale Friday and Saturday and naturally Fridays forecast threatened rain.  So I'll try to shoot for this week.

So I've spent most of my weekend walking through my house and shaking my head. We've been in this house 10 years now and each room seems to reflect a different decorating style. Wrong, wrong, wrong! I want it all to flow, none of this mish mosh of stuff. My kitchen is Mary Englebreit'ish, my dining room very Shabby Chic and the family room is cottage. Hmmmmm.....confusion.

Although I love Shabby Chic we are a two dog and temporarily two cats family and that nice clean look is lost on these mongrels. They march in with muddy paws, bodies that have rolled in the grass, through the bushes and God knows where and then they sit on the furniture, lay all over the carpets and everything is a mess. Too many furry friends. Then there's the husband, the guy that thinks he can just plunk down his derriere in his work clothes on the freshy washed slipcovers of the couch and I shouldn't get upset. Did I mention that he works with black iron all day long? So needless to say there are going to be some changes in the house starting this week because I'm on my way to becoming less confused. This will become the 40's cottage that it was meant to be. I'll fill you in on my progress.

Tonite I have several auctions starting at 9pm central. Here's a sneak preview..................

A scary story....

My sister lives outside London. The town that she lives in is changing, not the kind of place that you want to run around in after dark. Wednesday night she was home alone, her son at a friends for a sleepover and her boyfriend working his usual overnight shift keeping the tubes running smoothly in London. They live in a typical for the area attached house with brick walls surrounding the garden out back and the only entry is from a secured gate at the side of the house. It's secured because they have a large boxer dog named Oz whom they treasure. The gate is NEVER left open and requires a human to unlatch it.

Just as she was going to bed about 12:30am a dog appeared at her back patio doors, barking and carrying on wanting to come in. She was startled first by the dog appearing and secondly because OZ was carrying on back at him. She wasn't sure what to do other than find a way to quiet the dogs before her neighbors all woke and blamed her for the disturbance. Her first thought was the Emergency Vets office, they recommended that she try to bring him in from the rain.  OK why she would call them and not the police is something that she and I haven't figured out yet. Just goes to show that we really don't think rationally sometimes. She was afraid to open the door not knowing how OZ would carry on and she knew she wouldn't be able to break up a couple of dogs going at it in the garden.

So she did what any good computer age person would do....she took pictures. Now whether she took pictures to show the neighbors that it wasn't OZ causing the disturbance or whether it was just to validate the crazy story I don't know but these pics are a bit chilling. Let me continue.....

A half hour-45 minutes go by there's a knock at the door. She looks out and sees a tall man and he says through the window that his dog is in her garden.  In her head shes thinking 'how does he know its in my garden?' The gardens are all so close together there it would be hard to tell. She looks over at her neighbors houses, all dark, no sign of him knocking at anyone elses door. He insists 'can u open your gate so I can get my dog?'. There's no way that shes going out there and tells him to 'open it yourself!' and 'get your bloody dog!'.

With that he starts down the side of her house to the back and rounds up the dog which she said seemed to take a long time. Now mind you, he has to pass her kitchen windows and kitchen door, looking at everything along the way. He finally walks back out and down the street.

Bernie can't sleep now because shes nervous and decides to look at the pictures that she took. She is totally startled by what she sees and shoots off an email to me with these first two pics attached.

Dog4

The next morning I called her and she mentioned that there were other pictures that she wanted to show me. These pics clearly show that the dog is looking at someone/something. There's absolutely nothing in her garden that could have held this dogs attention and made it stop barking other than a person, his person.

Dog1

he's looking back and to the path here-quiet

Dog2

now he's looking directly to the side of the patio doors. If Bernie were to have opened the door for this dog what would have happened????

Later in the day once everyone was home she walked out into the garden and came across a large heavy piece of wood. She asked her boys if they had seen it before and they hadn't. Obviously this man was waiting for her to open the patio door and...oh I can't bear to think about it. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Moral of the story, this may be a new ploy using dogs now to lure you out of your house. Sure this happened in England and thats a long way away but it can happen anywhere. Just be careful.

6AM

I have been up since 4:45, I do this a lot. Mike goes off to work and I sit here and try to plan my day...ok I lie, I'm not that organized. I sit here and pet my doggies and drop in your blogs and enjoy the quiet.

I have a lot to do today. The garage sale is hopefully this weekend (pending weather) and that is a huge undertaking in itself. Plus we have been scraping wallpaper in one room and painting in another all simultaneously. There's always some sort of chaos going on here and I don't know why that is. This is a house of madness, good madness but still madness. It seems that summer is always this way, no schedules, no planned meals, we stay up too late, get up too early, craziness. I can't imagine what it would be like if we lived in Alaska and it were light 24 hours a day.

Remember those curtains that I showed you last week? The floral ones that I was going to hang in my kitchen? Well thats not going to work out so I'll be listing those on Ebay tonite with some other goodies that I came across while cleaning out for the garage sale. It's amazing that we put this stuff away and just forget about it. Does that happen to you too?

I need to make a trip to Ikea this week too to pick up magazine holders, they have wood ones that you can paint or decoupage to match your environment. These belong to my daughter...

Oh it's light now. I had better get myself moving. Sorry for the boring blog.

Today, 450 miles roundtrip.

We went to Michigan today. Lovely weather and good directions how can we lose! First stop was Chris's house, we hand delivered her chandeliers.  She's wasn't home but we put them on her large porch. Bad photographer that I am I didn't get great pictures but I will tell you that the front of her house is darling. In the front middle is a large arched window and there on the ledge sit all these pretty starfish in a row. It was so inviting. Do you suppose if I go up to the window that I can get a look inside or will someone call the police?? LOL. I peeked a little and all I can say is awesome! The house is 200 years old and so cool! At each end of the porch are the most fab screen doors too. Anyhow, this is me...proof that I was there being a peeping tom, chandelier delivery person. Sorry I missed you Chris.

Meatchrishouse

We headed back to South Haven. I haven't been there since I was a kid and I barely recognized it. It's so built up just like everything I guess. Didn't stop me from thinking it was great. We took a walk on the pier and watched the boats pulling in and out. The sky was a perfect blue and not too hot.

It was a lot of driving for one day and Mike was pooped. He could sit and watch the water forever. When we were in Florida a few years back it was hard to tear him away from the ocean.  I think he would have liked to have had a Jimmy Buffet kind of life. A Pirate Looks at 40...plus 8.

Mikeatshaven

Because he was such a good sport I bought him a cool new pirate shirt. The man deserves something after a 450 mile round trip.

and of course I found a few trinkets for me

I hope that everyone is having an enjoyable weekend!

TGIF

Thank God it's Friday! What a week! We are taking a day trip to South Haven tomorrow. The weather is supposed to be spectacular and just having a day away from the house will be good for the soul. We were suppose to go up and see my friend Chris, I met her through Ebay and it was just one of those things where you just click. Anyhow this turned out to be a busy weekend for her so we're putting our meeting off a bit. I'll miss you Chris! Anyhow we can spend a nice day in South Haven.

Blog1_2

I'll take my camera and get some snaps to show you next week.

My oldest daughter Sarah and her fiance have been on holiday this past week. They happened to be in NY when they had that steam explosion.  They were stuck in traffic and all of a sudden there were hundreds of people running towards them away from the blast. They didn't know why they were running and it really frightened Sarah. She yelled to a woman "why is everyone running?" and the woman responded "I don't know, they just said to run!" It was absolute panic. So there is a memorable vacation story. Scary but memorable.

Blog2

She said that this smoke/steam made it even more frightening!  They had just passed that exact intersection where it blew not 5 minutes before. Ewwww I can't talk about it without getting goosebumps.

Blog3_2

I have been preparing for a Garage Sale this week. I'm not sure exactly when I'll have it because it's much more than I had anticipated. There have been piles thru-out the house for donations, garage sale and Ebay. What a mess! The scary part is yet to come and that's dealing with the people. I just figure that I'll mark everything really cheap and just get rid of it.

Blog4

You all remember my Sea Captain?? Well obviously he has no home here so I put him on Ebay in hopes that some nice lady would buy him to hang on a wall in a cottage by the sea. I got an opening bid-YEAH! A few days later I got a nice email from an Ebayer that corrected the artists name. I had mentioned in the description that it was this or that, couldn't make it out, turns out it was neither. After she said his name I looked and YES its very obvious to me now. Sorry I'm a 46 year old woman that wears her reading glasses on her head rather than her face. Anyhow I tried to correct my description and Ebay would only allow a little blurb at the bottom...the bottom meaning under the auction template, scrolling all the way down. Ebay also doesn't recognize the artists name in the SEARCH unless you tick the little box that says to search descriptions too. How many of you do that? I know I don't. Well anyway, I then looked up the artist and found two paintings on Ebay, one is $2500 and the other $2995. So if you want to invest in a piece of art you might want to go and bid on my auction because at the moment it has 5 bids and is $28.00!!!  Never know what fool will list a masterpiece as junk art on Ebay.....this week I guess it was me!!  @%@$&*#@

BID NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summer Days

This weekend I found something fabulous! It's already adding a lot of excitement to my patio. It's an old umbrella for our patio set.

Blog1

These are the pretty flowers that we sit under. I think they're chrysanthemums?  Do you see those wire baskets stacked on the ground? I have no idea what to do with those. Any ideas?

Blog2

and this is the yummy top, AQUA! Look at all that fun fringe!  There in the back on the clothesline is a beautiful vintage bedspread, also AQUA which was found at an estate sale this weekend.

What else did we do? Well we shabbied up a chandelier...

Emailchandy

...actually Mike did. He is ever so patient and attached all the prisms. He does a nice job fixing these things up for me. Thanks honey!

Oh yes and I have treasures but I can't show you just yet. It's a bit gloomy here, maybe rain in the forecast? I'll get pics later.

Also, thanks to everyone for trying to help identify the fabric pillows that I asked about the other day. I still have not found mfg. or name but I will keep searching. Maybe I'll just go back to my original thought and that is a denim sofa and have all these vintage tablecloths (only the cutters) made into throw pillows.  That would probably look great with all the vintage hankies around here. Ahhhh decisions, decisions.

Well I'm off to ready myself for the day. Hopefully the sun will shine and I can come back with more pictures.

Have a great Monday!

Are there any Fabric-a-holics in the house???

Calling all you fabric-a-holics out there!  I came across these pillows and adore the fabric. There are no tags, no way to determine who made them. If you know what this is, even a guess would be ok because I'll investigate every lead. I'd really like a couch in this or maybe just fabric for a slip or curtains. I'd appreciate any help at all.

New curtains?

After a few days of oppressive heat and humidity the air has finally cleared. I've turned my a/c off, threw open the windows and stood on the patio in my pjs for a few minutes taking it all in. Yes, a good day ahead.

I found these fun curtains yesterday.I might use them in my kitchen. If I do I will have to have them altered because one set is longer than the other.  My Pottery Barn loving #1 daughter came home yesterday and immediately noticed. She liked them, she really liked them! I was shocked. When I found them I wasn't sure that I would use them at all but on a whim I threw them up against the window and here we are. Of course if I keep them it will require some redecorating......we're never, ever really done decorating are we?! There's always some new temptation to lead us down the path.

Aren't they fun? I'm actually going to let them hang for a few days and see how I feel about them later. Opinions anyone?

The weekend....

7707

This was our Saturday fun. We were invited to a BBQ and fireworks display at one of hubbys old co-workers house.  I wasn't really excited about going, I hate going places where you know no one but it ended up being a great time. The house sits right on the river and we watched boats go by all afternoon. Now I don't know where you live but if you are in the Chicagoland area you don't find a lot of people that live on the water, it was a treat. Once it was dark just three houses down there is a park and the Village had their fireworks display there, right over the river, it was spectacular. All the boats were stopped just in front of our lot and they anchored and watched the display. We sat in our lawn chairs and enjoyed the whole spectacle. Good stuff!

I spent yesterday afternoon doing Ebay listings. My hankie collection needed some weeding out and the Childrens category was the first to go. As darling as they are I have no nurseries to decorate, no little ones to give them to. Here's a few fun ones...

We FINALLY finished the hankie border in our bedroom. It had been 1 wall short of completion for months but now it's done. We both love it! It adds so much color to that space on your wall that looks so empty but mostly it gives me the opportunity to enjoy my hankies every day. I still need a few pictures for the walls but I'm just waiting for the 'perfect' thing.

I also found a few pretties to list on pinkpaintandroses later today. Here's a sneak preview........

The Captain and I

I came across this fella just a week ago and I am crazy in love with him. He seemed to follow me with his eyes the minute I saw him. It was an uneasy feeling. He's not my type but I couldn't help but keep sneaking glances back at him. Now what would I do with this man? How would I explain him to my family, my friends? They say opposites attract right?  Oh my gosh what would I tell my husband? My palms were sweaty, I had to get up my courage to walk over to him. I couldn't bear the thought of passing him up and always living with the 'what if?'

Against all my better judgment I threw caution to the wind and approached him. He was ruggedly handsome, distinguished with  piercing eyes. Yes, I had to have him. I brought him home, feverishly explained to my family that I thought it was love. They scoffed, shook their heads in disbelief. My husband was 'shocked' to say the least. He couldn't believe that I had brought this man into our home...actually neither could I.

I've had him all over the house. He's just not working out here. How could I have been so foolish!

He'll make a good companion to someone, I'm sure he will. He's quiet, almost brooding. He doesn't take up much room. Can I send him to you?
